Description
Splendid carte view of Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnson. Johnson would see extensive combat during his 34-year military career, fighting actions in the Black Hawk War, the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican–American War, the Utah War, and the American Civil War. On December 21, 1860, Johnston took command of the Department of the Pacific. He resigned on April 9, 1861, when his home state of Texas seceded from the Union. Leading Confederate troops at Shiloh Church, he was successful, at first, but was shot in the leg when he rode too far ahead of his troops. Because he’d suffered nerve damage from a dueling wound, he didn’t realize the severity of his injury until his boot filled with blood but it was too late by that point. He quickly bled to death on the battlefield. Johnston was buried temporarily in New Orleans initially but was reinterred in 1867 when his remains were taken to the State Cemetery in Austin, Texas. This one is blind stamped along the front, bottom out of Baltimore. Very nice view.
