Description
Large cabinet card photo of the Soldier’s National Monument located at Gettysburg. This example is by well known Gettysburg photographer William H. Tipton. The back of the card bears an old ink inscription reading, “From Mrs. Davis August, 1893″. This is unquestionably the hand writing of Varina Davis, wife of the president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis! Card measures 8.25″ x 5″. Varina would travel extensively in her later years and attend numerous, both Confederate and Union veteran’s reunions during that time period. In 1893, Varina would be staying at a resort along the Hudson River where she would meet the wife of Ulysses S. Grant. I would assume it was during this stay that she traveled to Gettysburg and acquired this view. Exceptionally rare!
