Description
Spectacular carte view identified as Hospital Steward William Grobecker of the famed 9th New York Infantry, otherwise known as the Hawkin’s Zouaves. William would muster with the Zouave regiment in June of 1861 at Riker’s Island. That November, he would be promoted to hospital steward. He would serve in that role until his discharge in May, 1863. Standing here, William is shown photographed some time after his promotion. Dressed in the distinctive Zouave uniform worn by the regiment, his dark green medical caduceus can be seen worn on the upper arm. Casually posed resting on a saber, his fez and large tassel rest on the pedestal beside him. A second known view of William resides in the LOC collection. The reverse of this example is signed in William’s hand in period ink. Superb and rare view!
