Description
Wonderful carte view of a group of 5 Federal soldiers posed atop Lookout Mountain. At least one of the men is identified as a member of the 64th Ohio Infantry. The rest are presumed to be from the regiment as well. The 5 men strike various poses as they peer over the edge into the valley below from this famous overlook point. One of the men is noted on the cdv sleeve which housed the image as “B. F. McCoy”. This is no doubt Benjamin F. McCoy who would serve with “G” Company, mustering with the regiment in October, 1861. During the first week of May 1864, the regiment would embark on Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and fight in the campaign’s first battle at Rocky Face Ridge on May 9th. It was here that Benjamin would be wounded. Transported to Chattanooga hospital, he would succumb to the wound on May 19th and was interred at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. It appears Benjamin is the subject casually leaning back to the far right based off another known photo of him. This one is back marked out of Akron, Ohio. Great image!
