Description

Very desirable dead letter office carte view of a Federal officer. This example has the usual Dead Letter Office identification number in red ink located in the lower left, front corner. The reverse of the carte is inscribed in period ink “Yours Truly, Marion. Chapin’s Bluff, Va. Nov. 22nd, 1864″. This would be Marion Litzenburg of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery and formerly of the 112th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Marion would muster as a lieutenant with Company L in September, 1862. The 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery was formed during the spring of 1864 out of the 112th Pennsylvania Infantry after the ranks of the 112th swelled to over 3300 men. Marion would later serve on detached service with the Freeman’s Bureau assisting with the relocation and housing of former slaves. He would continue to serve until January of 1866. These Dead Letter Office cdv’s are getting hard to find. Really neat carte view!
