Description
Outstanding quarter plate ambrotype of a Federal cavalryman out of Leavenworth, Kansas. Full length pose of this cavalryman dressed in his service jacket with 1st sergeant’s rank visible and NCO’s trousers worn. He also sports a pair of large gauntlets and this fantastic, large brimmed hat to shade the soldier from the sun of the open frontier. His sash, which is worn around the waist, has been tinted yellow for his associated service with a cavalry regiment. Brandishing his heavy cavalry saber, he is also armed with a holstered revolver and this large side knife! In the corner can be seen the photographers stand for steadying his customers as they stood for their pose. I have no doubt that this was in fact taken in Kansas. I have had a few other’s from Kansas photographed in this same studio. I would presume this was a photographer set up in one of the forts established on the frontier. Some spotting to the left hand side but what a great looking image from a state we don’t often see! Housed in a half leatherette case.
