Bust portrait carte view of Lieutenant Gilbert Phelps of the 67th New York Volunteer Infantry. The 25 year old Rochester resident would muster as a wagoner in June, 1861. Over the next three years, Gilbert would receive promotions to sergeant, 1st sergeant, 2nd lieutenant and lastly to 1st lieutenant in September of 1863. The regiment would participate in all 23 major engagements of the Army of the Potomac! Phelps would manage to survive them all unscathed and receive a discharge in July, 1864. This one is signed in period ink across the front bottom “Yours Truly G. H. Phelps”. Back marked out of Auburn, New York
