Description

Carte view identified as 1st lieutenant Lucius F. Bushnell of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. Lucius would muster as a private in “E” Company in December, 1863. Over the next two years he would receive promotions to corporal, 2nd lieutenant and lastly to 1st lieutenant near the end of his enlistment. The regiment would be heavily engaged throughout 1864 as they would take part in the Rapidan Campaign which began in May. Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Ream’s Station and a half dozen other major engagements would keep the regiment busy throughout the summer of that year. The final year of the war would see the men of the 2nd New York taking part in the Appomattox Campaign and the battles which lead up to Lee’s surrender. This view show Lucius dressed in a tailored jacket with a velvet collar and wearing the rank of 1st lieutenant and a 2nd Corps badge pinned to the jacket. The reverse bears a period ink signature by Lucius reading, “Yours Respectfully Lucius Bushnell  Butternuts, N.Y. Otsego Co”. This one is back marked out of Washington. The regiment would march here to take part in the Grand Parade in early March, 1865. He no doubt stop to have his photograph taken here during his stay.
