Description
Very nice carte view of Lieutenant Melancthon Brown of New York. A 37 year old Melancthon would be commissioned a 1st lieutenant with the 22nd New York Light Artillery in September, 1862. In February of 1863 it would become Battery M of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery. The battery would mainly serve in the defense of Washington, however Melancthon would serve but an additional two months following the transfer. In April he would resign his commission and return home with failing health. Standing view of Melancthon wearing the rank of 1st lieutenant. Housed in the original album sleeve with the name “Mel Brown”. Presumably because whoever wrote the inscription had no clue how to spell his entire name! This view has the lesser seen scalloped border. No back mark on this one.
