Description

Wonderful silver id medallion identified to Private Lewis Fox of the 73rd new York Infantry. The regiment would be known by many names to include the Fire Brigade, Second Fire Zouaves, Sickles Brigade, Fourth Regiment and lastly, the Fourth Excelsior Regiment. Lewis would initially muster with “E” Company of the 163rd new York Infantry before transferring into “C” Company of the 73rd in January, 1863. He would later transfer into “F” Company in September, 1864. Following his transfer into “F” Company, the next month Lewis would be captured at Boydton Plank Road and would not be paroled until February of the following year at Aikins Landing, Virginia. He would see no further action for the remainder of the war being discharged at Camp Distribution on April 7, 1865. This is a beautiful medallion dating to his time serving with “C” Company. The front of the badge is stamped ” LEWIS FOX CO. C. 4th REG EXC BRIGADE NY CITY. NY”. The opposite side list’s all of the battle sin which he would take part. The Peninsular Campaign, Bristoe Station, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wapping Heights, Kelly’s Ford, Locust Grove and Mine Run. A note of interest, the stamp font’s for the battle listing’s differ in the type and size which would indicate that Lewis was having the battles added to the medallion out in the field following each battle rather than at war’s end. This one is about an inch in diameter. Really neat piece!
