Exceptional carte view of Major Henry N. Alden of the 38th Illinois Infantry. Commissioned a captain with “A” Company, he would begin his service in August, 1861. Mustering for a three year term, Alden would be promoted to major in October of 1862. The regiment would see action in nearly a dozen engagements. Following the Battle of Perryville, the regiment would be heavily engaged at Stone’s River. Henry would be slightly wounded during the fight but would remain with the regiment. They would next slug it out Chickamauga. Henry would be seriously wounded during the fight with 180 men killed, missing or wounded out of the 300 that went into battle. The following April, Henry would resign his commission due to health concerns resulting from his wounding at Chickamauga. This view shows the young officer wearing his rank as major. The reverse of the card is signed in period ink, “Henry N. Alden Maj. 38″ Ills”. Back marked out of Springfield, Illinois.
