Carte view of Major Louis Pelouze. A graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1853, he was assigned to the artillery and served during the anti-slavery disturbances in Kansas. He would also serve as acting assistant adjutant-general during the Utah expedition. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned a captain in May of 1861 and appointed Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of General John A. Dix taking part in the Port Royal Expeditionary Corps. He would next serve as Acting Inspector-General of the Department of the South and take part in the capture of Fort Pulaski. Serving during the Shenandoah Campaign, he would be engaged in a brisk skirmish near Port Republic before being seriously wounded during the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9th, 1862. He would return to duty in October of that year, serving on special duty in the Defense of Washington. Pelouze would be appointed Assistant Adjutant-General of the Department of Virginia from February to July, 1863, and then the Department of Virginia and North Carolina until August. He would spend the remainder of the war on special duty in the Adjutant-General‘s Office at Washington, D. C. Louis would be brevetted to Lieutenant Colonel for “Gallant and Meritorious Services at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia” and brevetted again to Colonel for “Diligent, Faithful, and Meritorious Services in the Adjutant-General‘s Department during the Rebellion”. A final brevet to Brigadier General in the  U. S. Army would come in March, 1865, for most “Valuable and Meritorious Services, both in the Field and in the Adjutant-General‘s Department, during the Rebellion”. He would continue to serve in the War Department post war, in charge of records of Colored Volunteer Troops among other roles. His death would come while still serving in the War Department in 1878 at the age of 47. This one is back marked of Washington. Vey nice view.
