Description
Beautiful ninth plate melainotype. I’m not entirely sure what this young man’s affiliation was. Possibly Confederate or maybe Massachusetts militia, possibly even a cadet. I don’t really know. Dressed in a grey frock, the collar is trimmed in either black or a dark read. The pointed cuffs are trimmed in the same material, very similar to what we see with many Tennessee images. He does appear to be wearing eagle buttons on the jacket as well. Wearing the rank of 2nd lieutenant, the shoulder boards are of the same color trim as the rest of the uniform. A grey cap is also worn with large brass letters “V G” pinned to the front. Something “Guards” I would presume. This does very much have the feel of an early Tennessee image but I really don’t know for sure. Super sharp image with excellent clarity. Housed in a half leatherette case.
