Description

Carte view identified Benjamin F. Kierulff of the 28th Iowa Infantry. Benjamin would muster with “C” Company as a private in September, 1862. For nearly two years, Benjamin would serve among the ranks of the regiment fighting at such places as Port Gibson, Champion’s Hill, the Siege of Vicksburg and the Red River Campaign. In July of 1864, Benjamin would take a promotion to hospital steward where he would serve until wars end. This view shows Benjamin dressed in his winter garb. Sporting a sack coat, he holds a pair of gloves in his hand. Draped over the chair can be seen his greatcoat, scarf and grey slouch cap. A very nice period ink signature on the reverse reads, “Yours Truly, Ben F. Kierulff, Algiers, Ga. Janry 8th, 1864″. This one is effected by a horizontal crease in the middle of the card. No back mark.
