Description

Superb carte view identified as Private Henry Barrett of the 14th Vermont Infantry. Henry would muster with the 14th in mid October of 1862. He would be among the 647 men from the regiment that would arrive of the battlefield of Gettysburg on July 1st. On July 3rd, they would take part in the repulse of Pickett’s Charge delivering several volleys into the approaching Confederate lines. Gettysburg would be the regiments only fight. They would be discharged at the end of the month. Henry would re-enlist in August, 1864, serving as a private with the 2nd Vermont Infantry. There he would fight through Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign before being discharged in June, 1865. This view is fact from the Dead Letter Office and carries the hallmarks of that office including the red ink identification number and pin holes. While this view itself does not bear an identification, an identical view is identified by the Chesterfield Vermont Historical Society. Back marked out of Rutland, Vermont. Great view from a seldom seen state.
