Description

Seldom seen carte view of a Federal flag bearer. This came out of a grouping of images attributed to the 85th Illinois Volunteer Infantry back in 2009. Standing pose of this infantryman dressed in his frock with flag bearer’s insignia worn on both sleeve’s. His felt cap rests on the pedestal beside his with brass laurels and US insignia pinned to the front. If we are in fact looking at a member of the 85th Illinois this would be Josiah Stout who served as the regimental flag bearer. He would be discharged in June, 1865. This one is back marked out of Nashville. The 85th Illinois would in fact be stationed here for a considerable amount of time guarding trains and on post duty. Not a rank you see very often.
