Description
Superb carte view identified as Sergeant Henry Everdell of the 7th New York State Militia. Henry would serve in the 4th Company beginning in late April, 1861. He would serve 2 months before being discharged in June. Henry would serve two more terms with the 7th, from May to September of 1862 and again, briefly in July, 1863. He is shown here dressed in his full kit. His bayonet-tipped rifle is held over his shoulder while a holstered revolver and knife are visible on the waist belt. Dressed in the standard 1861 uniform issued to the 7th New York with his knapsack, full haversack and buff white leather belts. Affixed to the front of the cap is the numeral “4” while sporting a New York Militia belt plate. Known as the “Silk Stocking Regiment”, they would primarily serve guard and garrison duty within the capital and were some of the first men to respond to Lincoln’s call for troops at the onset of war. This example bears a period ink signature on the reverse reading, “Sgt. Everdell 4th Co.”. Stellar carte view!
