Description
Nice bust portrait view identified as Sergeant Henry Kaley of the 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Kaley would muster as a sergeant with “A” Company in September, 1862. He would be present with the regiment up until their very first engagement at Winchester. Here he would be severely wounded and captured there when a rebel ball slammed into his hip on June 13, 1863. Following a short stint in a rebel captivity, Henry would be exchanged and remain absent from the regiment for the remainder of the year, convalescing in a Columbus, Ohio General Hospital. From December of 1863, through October of the following year, Henry would be on detached recruiting duty, intermingled with several hospital stays as he continued to recover from his hip wound. In January, 1865, he would be ordered to report to the Pioneer Corps before a discharge the following month. The wound would plague Henry for the remainder of his life. This example bears a period ink signature on the front reading “H. S. Kaley Sergt. Co. A. 123 O.V.I.”. The reverse of the card shows a stenciled photographers imprint by R. J. Rankin with a short note at the top of the card that states “Please put in “album”.”. This one does come with a full print out of his service records.
