Description

Brief letter written by Sergeant Rice Bull of the 123rd New York Infantry. This one is dated February 13, 1863 while the regiment was encamped at Stafford Court House. The letter is in response to an inquiry of the father of one “Reuben Martin”, as to whether his son is listed on the pay rolls, to which the sergeant reply’s that he is in fact listed. Reuben would succumb to disease at Fort Martin in 1862 and I presume this inquiry is related to his death. Rice would muster as a private with the 123rd in August, 1862. He would receive subsequent promotions to both corporal in 1862 and to sergeant in 1864. The regiment would be heavily engaged during their very first fight at Chancellorsville, and Rice would be counted among the wounded. He would survive the wounded and continue to serve until his discharge in June, 1865. This one is very legible and written in bold ink.
