Description
Very nice carte view of 3 members of the 11th New York Cavalry. They are photographed here early in their enlistment and dressed in their newly issued cavalry uniforms. All three men are equipped with M1851 sword belt rigs and displaying their heavy cavalry sabers. Each man is also armed with a holstered revolver. While the men are not identified, they are no doubt members of the 11th New York. Back marked by J. L. Oeffler of Staten Island, where the 11th New York Cavalry was raised. Oeffler held a monopoly on the island as it’s sole photographer and photographed many of the members of the 11th New York. These men have been noted as belonging to “E” company with the man as center identified as Sergeant Walter Tully, however I have no idea how that id was determined.
