Carte view of Union General Thomas Greely Loring of Massachusetts. In July 1861, Loring joined the United States Volunteers receiving an appointment to the staff of General Ambrose Burnside with the rank of 1st lieutenant. The following February, Loring was promoted to captain and served as assistant quartermaster on Burnside’s staff. He had been promoted to lieutenant colonel prior to the Battle of the Crater in July, 1864, and that August, received brevets to colonel and brigadier general, highlighting his “gallant and meritorious services” at the Siege of Knoxville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Bethesda Church. After Lee’s surrender in April 1865, Loring received his third and final brevet, to major general in July, highlighting his overall services during the war. The following month, Loring would end his military career and leave the service. Back marked out of Brooklyn with some minor surface abrasions.
