Description
Very nice signed carte view of Lieutenant William Burgess of the 6th Michigan Infantry. . Burgess would muster with “I” Company of the 6th Michigan Infantry in Aug. 1861 at Albion, Michigan for 3 years at the age of 23. A promotion to corporal would come in November of followed by promotions to sergeant, 1st sergeant and finally to lieutenant before war’s end. His discharge would come at New Orleans in August, 1864. Initially, the regiment was deployed to Baltimore, Maryland, in August 1861, where it performed garrison duty before joining Benjamin Butler’s New Orleans expedition. They would fight at the Battle of Baton Rouge and later took part in the grueling Siege of Port Hudson in 1863. In July of that year, they would be re-designated the 6th Michigan Heavy Artillery. This view dates to around the time of William’s discharge. Back marked out of New Orleans, William stands in his officers uniform while leaning against a pedestal at his side which features a small statue of a female subject. Nice period ink signature across the front bottom reading, “Lieut. W. J. Burgess”. Very nice view from the state of Michigan
