Description
Sixth plate tintype of a Federal cavalryman armed with a seldom seen Gallagher carbine. Dressed in his cavalry jacket and light blue re-enforced trousers, this mounted solder brandishes a Gallagher carbine for the camera. One of the few regiments to be issued the weapon would be the 6th Ohio Cavalry. Sporting this large M1858 Hardee hat, the numeral “6” and brass cavalry insignia is visible pinned to the front of the cap. The regiment would have plenty of opportunities to put the weapon to use. They would fight in countless campaigns, beginning with the West Virginia Campaign. Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Mine Run and Bristoe Campaigns as well Five Forks, Sailors Creek and several others. There are some surface abrasions to the surface but this is a seldom seen carbine. This one comes housed in a patriotic leatherette case with a split spine.
