Rare vignette carte view identified as Captain Clarence Woolfolk of the 47th Virginia Infantry. Assigned to A.P Hill’s Division under General Longstreet’s command, the 47th would fight with the Army of Northern Virginia. Clarence would initially be commissioned a 1st lieutenant with “G” Company in July of 1861 before receiving a promotion to captain in April, 1862. He would serve with the regiment through the hard fought campaigns of 1862 and 1863. The Seven Days, Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and in 1863 the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and a handful of others. With the year 1864, the regiment would fight in several engagements starting with The Wilderness in May of that year. It was followed by Spotsylvania, North Anna and lastly for Clarence, Cold Harbor. Clarence would be killed during the engagement on June 3rd and was later interred at Hollywood Cemetery. This view shows Clarence dressed in his grey, double breasted frock and wearing his captain’s rank. An old pencil inscription across the front bottom reads, “Clarence Woolfolk’. A second identical pencil id graces the reverse of the card. This one is back marked by famed Richmond photographer, Charles Rees.
