Extremely nice carte view of Captain Joshua M. Wells of the 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The future captain would muster as a 2nd lieutenant with the regiment during the late fall and winter of 1862. In December, 1862 the regiment would be ordered to Louisville, Kentucky to help defend against a suspected attack by John Hunt Morgan. While there Wells would be promoted to 1st lieutenant. The regiment would remain at Louisville for several months before being ordered to Tennessee. The newly minted 1st lieutenant would receive his promotion to captain in March, 1863. In September of that year they would begin an arduous march over the mountains to take part in the regiments first battle at Chickamauga. They would take part in the second days fighting and it would be a hell of a baptism for the men of the 113th. 382 men would go into the fight. They would lose 138 of them including Captain Joshua Wells. He would be shot through the left lung falling on the field of battle. Moved to a small field hospital, he would live for another 7 days before finally succumbing to the wound. Wells was initially buried on the battlefield. Several months later when Federal forces took possession of the field his body was exhumed and returned home to Columbus. There is a very detailed account of the incident written in “Every-day Soldier Life: Or a History of the One Hundred and Thirteenth Ohio Infantry”. Wonderful and very well known view of the captain. This one is back marked out of Columbus, taken before the regiment left the state. Very nice view!
