Lieut. Eben Reifenbach 5th Wisconsin Infantry Letter

$250

Item No. AR2954MF Category

Description

Wonderful 4-page letter written by Lieutenant Eben Reifenbach of the 5th Wisconsin Volunteers. This example is written on rare 5th Wisconsin letterhead and dated June 27, 1862. Written from Camp Griffin, Eben has addressed the letter to his lady friend “Eley”. The letter speaks mostly of his hope for better days when the war will be over and his feelings for Eley. There is also a small amount of writing concerning camp life and his family at home. Eben would muster as a corporal with the regiment in May of 1861. He would receive promotions to sergeant, and finally to lieutenant in July, 1864. However his promotion would not last long. In November of the year he would be stripped of his rank and court martialed. I could not locate a reason for his dismissal from the service. This one does have a few separation points along some the folds but overall condition is very good. It is missing a 1′ section on the last page. Very hard to find letter head!
