Description
Rare carte view of an unidentified cavalryman armed with a seldom seen Gallagher carbine. There were a handful of cavalry units which would receive these carbines. The 7th and 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut, 6th and 9th Ohio,1st Massachusetts, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania and the 3rd West Virginia. This cavalryman stands dressed in his new uniform and resting on his carbine. His carbine sling crosses his chest along with the shoulder harness for his M1851 eagle waist belt from which his saber hangs. Brass cavalry insignia is pinned to the top of his cap along with his regimental designation which consists of two numbers. Unfortunately I cannot make the numbers out. This example does have some wear to it but this is a hard to find carbine! No back mark.
