Description
Extremely rare quarter plate ambrotype of this mounted artilleryman photographed in the snow. Seated atop his mount, he holds the reins in one hand while dressed in his artillery uniform and grasping his saber with his other hand. The photographer has even gone so far as to tint the “US” brand on the horses front shoulder. In the back ground stand several wooden structures and half a dozen canvas tents. One can see that the ground is covered in snow and numerous hoof prints scattered about! The photographer has also tinted the foreground green where the snow has melted away giving the appearance of grass. War date images photographed in the snow are very seldom encountered! Housed in a full leatherette case.
