Description
Wonderful carte view identified as Surgeon David M. Goodwin of the 3rd Vermont Infantry. Interesting pose of the surgeon seated at a table. Laying on the table is a copy of the “New England Business Directory” dated 1850 and a cdv album which Goodwin has partially opened. His McDowell pattern cap rests on the banister with embroidered “MS” insignia sewn to the front of the cap. Goodwin would be commissioned an assistant surgeon with the 3rd Vermont in June of 1861. His promotion to surgeon would come in April, 1863. The 3rd Vermont would see considerable service, fighting in many of the wars most significant campaigns and would take part in nearly two dozen battles. David’s skills would be called upon considerable during the regiments tenure. This example exhibits a period pencil inscription on the reverse reading, “Dr. D. M. Goodwin 3rd V. V.”. No back mark on this one but a great view!
